LINE ON
PAPER
These works are all created with oil painted on Fabriano paper (considered by many as the best paper in the world, you can read more about it here). The technique and subject matter are drawn largely from oriental art, where the simplest line can carry significance and meaning through the subtle movement of the paintbrush as the paint is applied.
For subject matter I look around me, especially the trees and landscapes, and try to capture the relationships humans have with their natural environment. There are centuries of artists in the East to draw inspiration from, but Korean woodcut artist Lee Chul Soo manages to do this with often humorous analogies between nature and humanity, which I love.
The technique I'm using is unforgiving - one line painted in error and the painting has to be re-started. I'll be moving to limited edition prints in the near future.
