MONOPRINTMONOPRINT

The work here is the result of a week at The Artists' Press in April 2010, a magical spot in the farmlands near White River in the Mpumalanga lowveld. Surrounded by trees, birds, gardens, veggie gardens and water, Master Printer Mark Attwood and his wife Tamar have created an extraordinary place for artists to work. The Artists' Press is internationally recognised and many of South Africa's top artists have worked there. It's inspiring to pick through William Kentridge's reds or the late Robert Hodgins' blues to find the right pigment.

Monoprints are made by applying paint to a perspex sheet, then this is run through the press and printed onto a sheet of paper by the very able Leshoka or Syneth. A second print can be made, called a "ghost", as the remaining paint fades. Each additional colour is then repeated in the same manner, building up one layer at a time onto the paper.

Also in the studio for the week were Justice Mokoena, Fed Clarke, Josie Grindrod and Celeste Schoeman, which created a great synergy of creativity - I usually work alone and it was fantastic to work with other artists and share ideas and perspectives with them.

Each monoprint from this series is embossed with The Artists' Press chop.
