Ghosts of Johannesburg

Great animals used to roam where Johannesburg lies today, just 130 years ago; these ghosts are a reflection on the land’s past. In this series I’m peeling back layers of history.

The photographs are taken by me on the streets of the city when they’re quiet and almost deserted, usually early on Sunday mornings, walking with my dog. I treated them to be hazy and somewhat shifting, like mirages, in this city which is constantly shifting – faster some say than any other city on earth.

I drew the animals with charcoal and then silkscreened them over silkscreened photographs images of the street scenes. There are some beautiful subtle details in some of the buildings.

The editions are numbered as Varied Edition (VE), as each uses varying tones of ink. Editions are small – 1, 4 or 8.
