These outdoor sculptures were first developed for The Wilds, the Joburg park I’ve rehabilitated the past 7 years. I developed them to create visual landmarks to draw people back into the park, which at the time was largely abandoned. Landmarks draw the eye, enabling people to engage with the landscape (and making photo opportunities).
They all start as charcoal sketches in my studio which are then laser cut from steel, and painted or powdercoated. They are fairly easy to install; the larger pieces include a base which goes into the ground, and the small monkeys, hushbabies etc have holes for nailing them into wood. They can be crated and shipped anywhere in the world.
The sculpture installations in the park won awards from BASA (Business Arts South Africa) and the SA Institute of Architecture. The Wilds is now one of Johannesburg’s leading visitor attractions.
