The Boulders are somewhat abstract, but echo natural shapes I’ve observed in Zimbabwe, Kenya, the eastern Free State and Limpopo provinces in South Africa, and on the islands of Principe and Samothraki. They are intended to be both object on a landscape and a frame through which one can look, drawing people towards them to read the words. Each Boulder carries phrases or individual words. I collect these words and have long lists of them, and sometimes clients give theirs to me. No Boulder is identical. They are installed with bases designed to be invisible, so that the Boulder appears to balance on the landscape, like those in the Matopos in Zimbabwe. They are usually made of mild steel and deliberately rusted to reveal a natural patina which blends into the surrounding landscape.
