This new series explores the history of New York City through my observations of architectural details and public artworks in different part of Manhattan.
I’ve been visiting the city each year in spring for a charity event I donate artworks to. This started about 10 years ago, and I’d spend a few weeks walking the streets and recording observations with my iPhone. I grew interested in the history around me, and started digging in archives – NYPL, the Library of Congress and other collections.
Back in Joburg, I worked with the images, combining old and new, and then developed lithographs with Joe at LL Editions, in small editions.
Lately I have been working with digital print processes, and a new series is emerging tracking doorways and historic buildings and the clues they present about the history of the city. These are full colour, larger format limited edition prints.
